The arrival of Pellenc’s exciting new Selectiv’ Process On-Board sorting system is a hot topic of conversation in the Australian wine industry, not only in the vineyard sector but also amongst winery owners and operators.  The Selectiv’ Process system, an option on Pellenc multifunction grape harvesters,  comprises a high-frequency, in-line de-stemmer and an on-board sorting table which successfully removes petioles and other matter from the harvest.

Pellenc Innovation and Experience

Drawing on Pellenc’s many years of experience in the viticultural, olive and other industries, the Selectiv’ Process brings together a range of clever

technologies to achieve its outstanding result.

Patented “Clear-View” Belt

Harvested fruit is conveyed onto Pellenc’s patented clear-view belt, which allows loose berries and juice to flow directly onto the on-board sorting tables, whilst retaining whole bunches, leaves, petioles and other MOG.

High Frequency On-Board Destemmer

The material retained on the belt moves into the high-frequency destemmer, which effectively resonates the berries from the bunch stalks, leaving these intact and preventing the problem of small pieces of stalk entering the load.  (Pellenc’s many years of experience in using low amplitude, high frequency vibration to remove olives without damaging branch tips has been applied to this process).

Left: Loose berries and juice flow through the clear-view belt directly onto the sorting tables, whilst whole bunches and other MOG move through the de-stemmer, then onto the on-board sorting tables.

The gentleness of this process is evidenced by the intact bunch stalks which are ejected from the machine and the lack of juice in the load.

Berries removed by the destemmer are carried onto the on-board sorting table, along with bare bunch stalks, petioles and other MOG.  The sorting table consists of two sets of ingeniously designed rollers, each of which plays a key role in the achievement of the final result in the bin.  The rollers in the first set are closely meshed and cleverly rotate petioles so that they are perpendicular to the side of the harvester.

Unwanted Vine Material and MOG Remains in the Vineyard

Once the petioles have been oriented in this way, the material moves onto the second set of rollers, which fit together in such a way as to leave a gap large enough for berries and juice to flow into the bin, but small enough to prevent petioles, leaves, bunch stalks and other material from doing so.  This material is carried to the edge of the machine and ejected onto the vineyard floor.

A Range

of Benefits and Savings

In addition to offering an outstanding sample in the bin, the Pellenc Selectiv’ Process offers a range of financial, environmental and other benefits for both vineyards and wineries.  Unwanted vine material is left in the vineyard, meaning that only valuable berries and juice are transported to the winery, also minimising the risk of disease transfer.  Wineries do not need to deal with and dispose of waste material, resulting in improved efficiencies, less waste and lower inputs.

Straight from Harvester to the Fermenter or Press

By carrying out the de-stemming process in the vineyard and producing a high quality sample with minimal MOG, the Selectiv’ Process can eliminate the need for some processing within the winery, reducing capital expenditure, labour, running costs, waste and carbon outputs.

A Global Success Story

The Pellenc Selectiv’ Process system reflects many years of research and development.  The removal of petioles from the harvest has long challenged the industry and whilst this in itself is a significant outcome, the additional benefits offered by the Selectiv’ Process have seen the uptake of this technology exceed all forecasts elsewhere in the world.  Already, over 150 machines equipped with the Selectiv’ Process have been sold world-wide and the first demo machine ordered by Pellenc Australia

was sold within days of the first press release hitting the Australian industry.  The interest in this technology from both the vineyard and the winery sectors here in Australia
has been overwhelming and people who have seen the system working in Europe
have come back full of enthusiasm for the many advantages it offers.
