Viticulture Harvester Smart System

Pellenc is the only harvester which can automatically vary the picking settings around posts.  Pellenc’s exclusive Smart System allows the operator to pre-set two different picking settings – one for the vines and one for the posts - which removes the need for compromise to protect vines or fragile posts.  Post-detection sensors identify the presence of a post and the machine automatically and instantaneously changes the picking settings from the optimal vine settings to the post settings.  For example, where the posts in the vineyard are vulnerable to damage, the picking head can open itself out and reduce the intensity of the shaking to ensure that the post is not damaged.  After a certain distance, which is pre-set by the operator, the machine reverts automatically to the in-vine settings to optimise the picking result.

Conversely, where posts are very sturdy, fruit around the posts can be difficult to remove, due to the reduction in movement caused by the solid posts.  In this case, more vigorous settings – which, if used in the panels would cause damage to the vines - can be used to improve the result around the post.  As the gentler settings are automatically activated once the machine has passed the post, damage to the vines is avoided.

The advantages of this system are particularly apparent in dry years, where fruit is difficult to remove due to low bunch weight and shrivel.  The more vigorous picking settings employed to remove the fruit can cause havoc on posts and this often results in the operator having to opt for less effective settings for fruit removal.

The six memories available on the Smart System for each set of picking settings – vine settings and post settings - allow the operator to swap between different settings on the move.  Where conditions within the vineyard parcel vary – due to soil conditions, disease, sun exposure, post fragility or other factors – the operator can, at the press of a button, select a different setting to suit that section of the vineyard.  As settings are automatically and instantaneously modified, it is easy to use two or three different settings within one row in order to achieve the best possible result.

Of course, as with any other harvester, an operator can choose to “set and forget”.  However, with increasing competitiveness and a focus on quality, and the simplicity of changing settings on the fly offered by Pellenc’s Smart System, more and more viticulturists are seeing the advantages of a harvester which provides so much flexibility.
